The mission of the International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD) is to foster international collaboration in education, research and clinical care to improve the lives of those with bipolar disorder and related conditions.
The intent of this collaboration is to advance the treatment of bipolar disorders and to improve outcomes and the quality of life for those living with bipolar disorder and their caregivers.
Bipolar disorder is a severe and debilitating mental illness that affects people all over the globe, with no regard for race, gender, or age.
Dr. David Kupfer, Founding President, and Dr. Ellen Frank launched the ISBD in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, on June 17, 1999 as a means to further the awareness, education, and research for bipolar disorders on an international level. The official launch of the ISBD took place at the 3rd International Conference on Bipolar Disorders (ICBD), where materials were distributed to all of the delegates inviting them to enroll in membership of the ISBD.
ISBD is a major source for emerging research and clinical data on bipolar disorders and is the only bipolar-focused, research-oriented Society working to bring this data not only to mental health professionals working in bipolar care, but also to those with lived experience and their families and care providers.
The Society currently offers several educational programs, including the Samuel Gershon Awards for Junior Investigators for best original research manuscripts, our annual conference, and our new Early and Mid- Career committee. In addition to its work to support trainees and EMC professionals in the field of bipolar disorders, the ISBD is also moving the field forward through it's numerous task forces that focus on specific specialty areas within bipolar disorders.
Bipolar Disorders – An International Journal of Psychiatry and Neurosciences (BDTJ), the official journal of ISBD, is available online and free to all ISBD members. BDTJ is dedicated to publishing the results of all research relevant to the basic mechanisms, clinical aspects, or treatment of bipolar disorders.
Your support helps us to continue developing research and clinical education that allows ISBD to shine a light and strengthen the overall understanding or bipolar disorders.
